NUITA Yoko, the first Director General of NWEC, has passed away
After reporting on women's issues as a journalist for many years, she became the first female commentator at NHK, Japan's public broadcaster.Thereafter, she took up a series of important positions, namely Director of the Tokyo Civil Administration Bureau, Chairperson of the Council for Gender Equality, Cabinet Office and Chairperson of the ICHIKAWA Fusae Center for Women and Governance. During her service at NWEC, she carried out many different projects to promote women's empowerment.
NWEC was regarded as one of Japan's priority measures for the United Nations Decade for Women (1976–1985) and opened in November 1977 as the only national facility for women's life-long education.
At that time, NWEC had three functions, namely "providing learning opportunities," "facilitating exchanges," and "collecting and providing information materials," and organized programs, such as national research seminars and networking events, "women's studies seminars" and international seminars, to provide opportunities for learning and exchange. In particular, in the area of "collecting and providing information materials," NUITA, who was a journalist, noted the lack of materials pertaining to women's issues while she was as a commentator for a news program, which led her to desire "an information center dedicated to women." This resulted in the opening of the Information Library (the current Information Center for Women's Education) in 1979.
In managing NWEC, NUITA sought to adhere to the following two basic principles:
1) NWEC should be broadly accessible to women in different parts of Japan, from different backgrounds, and from different walks of life; and 2) the women's education promoted by NWEC should include education for workers and citizens, rather than merely aiming to help women to improve their home management, childcare, and other knowledge and skills required of homemakers or to develop their cultural literacy.
Building on her enthusiasm, NWEC will continue to endeavor to achieve gender equality.
Lastly, we add that NUITA's manuscripts, notes, and other materials have been donated to the Women's Archives Center.
