Online meeting with international graduate students from the Appropriate Technology course at the University of Tsukuba

Date:October 1, 2021

On Friday, October 1, 2021, International graduate students from Russia, the Philippines and Vietnam, who are studying in an Appropriate Technology course at the University of Tsukuba made a visit to NWEC online. Students are working on a project to develop sustainable solutions for socio-economic issues by applying appropriate technologies. This group decided to develop products for the prevention of sexual harassment in a public place, namely on public transportation. Students shared their ideas such as multi-purpose bracelet which makes sounds for help, and a smart fabric which creates a vibration when a harasser attempts to grab the wearer.
After staff of the Office of Research and International Affairs shared the outline of NWEC, students and NWEC staff discussed the issue of sexual harassment in Japan as well as the products currently under development. A final presentation of the product by the students is scheduled in December 2021 at the University of Tsukuba.
