Research on the Comparative Study of the Gender Equality Policy in Southeast Asian Countries in the Kingdom of Cambodia

Date:February 8 to 15, 2014

Since FY2013, the National Women’s Education Center (NWEC) has been implementing a project titled the Comparative Study of the Gender Equality Policy in Southeast Asian Countries (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research [C]; Principal researcher: Masami OCHI). The aim of the research project is to study gender-responsive budgets, as well as government policies to prevent violence against women and support their economic independence, in the Republic of Korea, the Republic of the Philippines and the Kingdom of Cambodia.

As part of preliminary research for the above-mentioned project, staff researchers from NWEC’s Office of Research and International Affairs visited government offices and NGOs in the City of Phnom Penh between February 8, 2014 and February 15 and gathered information about gender equality policies in the Kingdom of Cambodia.

The major institutions they visited and the content of their research are as follows:

・Participation in a gender-responsive budget workshop, cosponsored by the Japan International Cooperative Agency (JICA) and the Ministry of Women’s Affairs for staff of line ministries

・Ministry of Justice: enactment of laws related to women, and gender sensitivity training of legal professionals

・Legal Support for Children and Women: protection and support for women who were victims of trafficking or gender based violence

It is our plan to publish some of the research results on NWEC’s website.
