Research conducted in the Republic of the Philippines

Date:January 19 to 28, 2014

Since FY2013, the National Women’s Education Center (NWEC) has been implementing a project titled Comparative Study of Gender Equality Policy in Southeast Asian Countries (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research [C]; Principal researcher: Masami OCHI).
The aim of the research project is to study gender-responsive budgets, as well as government policies to prevent violence against women and support women’s economic independence, in the Republic of Korea, the Republic of the Philippines and the Kingdom of Cambodia.

As part of this research, staff researcher from NWEC’s Office of Research and International Affairs visited academic institutions, government offices and NGOs in Metro Manila and Quezon City between Sunday, January 19, 2014 and Tuesday, January 28 and conducted interview-based research about gender equality policies in the Philippines.

The major institutions they visited and the content of the interviews they conducted at each of the institutions are as follows:

・University of the Philippines Center for Women Studies and GT-Toyota Asian Cultural Center : about the history of gender-responsive budgets that have been in place since the mid-1990s and issues that are currently faced

・Philippine Commission on Women : about gender-responsive budgets, outreach programs focused on violence against women, and successful cases of assistance offered to encourage women to become economically independent

・Department of Social Welfare and Development : about cases of responses to natural disasters that heeded gender differences

It is our plan to publish some of the research results on NWEC’s website.
